Steel corrosion and durability of calcium aluminate cement-reinforced mortars
The steel reinforcement corrosion behavior in concrete prepared with calcium aluminate cement (CAC) has been investigated. Two kinds of experiments have been conducted, one to characterize the influence of chloride ions and cover carbonation in the steel corrosion dynamics. The second set of experiments deals with the long-term effect of an active steel corrosion on the overall integrity of the reinforced sample. The polarization resistance technique was used for the first kind of experiments whereas the long-term consequences were studied by imposing an anodic constant current to the steel bars (forced corrosion). Tests were carried out in mortar specimens with and without aggressive and inhibiting ions. Types of steel investigated were regular reinforcing (carbon) steel, stainless steel, and zinc-coated steel. Results and conclusions are compared to the ones reported on ordinary Portland cement (OPC) mortars investigated under similar conditions.
