Procedure to define region of interest for Fourier transform Moire method
Fourier transform moire (FTM) is a full field non-contact method which can be used to measure in-plane displacements and strains. This method is suitable for strain analysis of materials which may undergo large deformation. The main steps of FTM include calculating the Fourier spectrum of the image, obtaining one harmonic of the spectrum, shifting the harmonic toward the origin of the spatial frequency axis and computing the complex moire fringe pattern. In this paper, a procedure utilizing image processing operations to identify the region occupied by specimen grids as the ROI mask for FTM strain analysis is developed. This procedure consists of edge detection, opening and closing operations. The details of this procedure are explained in this paper. For demonstration purposes, a square cross grating was put on a D shaped specimen made from EVA (ethylene vinyle acetate) foam material for FTM strain analysis.
