Fire control by water mist
The use of water mist in suppressing diesel fires in the engine plant rooms of offshore vessels is described. The effectiveness of the extinguishments depends on the spray location, spray momentum, drop size distribution, and fuel type. The higher the operating pressure, the more rapidly the fire was suppressed and then extinguished. It is observed that if the discharge of water mist was stopped immediately after the visible flame was extinguished, the diesel would be re-ignited within several seconds when there was still external heat flux.
