Regulation of ultrawideband ground penetrating radar inspection systems
This paper discusses testing procedures for radiated emission limits on ground penetrating radar (GPR) Systems imposed by Federal Communication Commission (FCC) and related regulations. GPRs are becoming common integrity assessment tools for reinforced concrete bridge decks and other nonmetallic structural elements. In the United States, the FCC has recently classified and authorized the use of GPR Systems as ultra wideband (UWB) devices with limitations on the power, frequency, pulse rates and mode of operation. The testing and analysis of UWB signals poses challenges because of the complexity of the mixed time and frequency format, the relatively high frequencies involved, the lack of prepackaged off-the-shelf UWB test instruments and the lack of a convenient means of calibration.
