Concrete bridge deck overlays evaluated by NDT
It is common practice to protect existing concrete bridge decks and approach ramps with a wearing surface comprised of polymer- or silica fume-modified concrete overlays, typically varying in thickness from 1 to 4 inches. In certain cases, areas of debonding of the overlay from the substrate have appeared some time after construction, characterized by cracking at the surface of the overlay. Reasons for this debonding include inadequate or over-aggressive substrate preparation, significant differences between the elastic moduli of the overlay and substrate, and high flexibility of the deck below. When considering how to address such bond failures, it is necessary to identify and quantify the debonded areas. The authors have used the Impulse Response Stress Wave nondestructive test for this purpose, and the application and success of this method for evaluating the problem of overlay debonding is illustrated here with case histories.
