Serially multiplexed fiber optic acoustic emission sensor for structural health monitoring of post tensioned structures
A serially multiplexed fiber optic acoustic emission sensor, which is capable of sensing acoustic emissions at several points along the length of a single fiber, is developed to perform structural health monitoring of post tensioned structures. The detection and identification of signals along a single data stream reduces the data acquisition rigor and provides for rapid real time damage location detection in materials. The experimental program here involved detection of fiber breakage in FRP post tensioned concrete beams by means of conventional fiber optic acoustic emission sensors and this developed serially multiplexed fiber optic acoustic emission sensor system. The fiber optic acoustic emission transducers were mounted at two ends of anchorages to monitor the acoustic emission events emitted during the beam test. The time domain waveform detected by the serially multiplexed system contains signals from both fiber transducers. A method is introduced for signal recognition and tagging of the AE waveforms. The linear source location method was employed for locating the fiber breakage in the FRP tendon and the distribution of fiber breakages calculated from theses AE signals agrees to the practical damage of beams.
