Maintenance of reinforced concrete by acoustic emission monitoring of corrosion
Corrosion of reinforcement in concrete due to salt attack is one of serious deteriorations in reinforced concrete (RC) structures. In marine environments and by the use of salty aggregare, reinforcing steel bars (rebars) are readily corroded by ingress of chloride ions. Consequently, several nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques are studied and developed to monitor the corrosion. These are mostly electro-chemical methods as represented by the halfcell potential measurement and so far marginally applicable. In this respect, an application of acoustic emission (AE) technique to monitor the corrosion to reinforced concrete is investigated as practical NDE. Following in situ observation, in a laboratory, cyclic dry-wet tests were conducted to simulate the salt damage of concrete. During the tests, continuous acoustic emission (AE) measurement and the half-cell potential measurement were carried out. Results of AE activity are compared with those of the half-cell potentials. Further chloride penetration was analyzed numerically. Thus, relations between the corrosion of rebars and the occurrence of AE events are clarified. It is found that AE monitoring could provide earlier warning of the corrosion than the half-cell potentials. By continuously monitoring AE activity, both onset of corrosion in reinforcement and nucleation of cracking in concrete could be identified nondestructively.
