Air-coupled impact-echo method for NDT of concrete
Air-coupled impact-echo method for NDT of concrete is presented. In this study, aircoupled sensors are used to determine the thickness and find delaminations in concrete slabs with impactecho approach. Results of the research show that air-coupled sensors can be applied with impactecho tests to find defects in concrete. Inexpensive musical microphones are very effective to locate delaminations. Signals obtained above shallow delaminations are dominated by the low frequency flexural resonant mode, which can be easily detected by a microphone. Broad band microphones and short duration impact force are needed, however, to find depth information of shallow delaminations. With the advantage of the non-contact nature, it is possible to develop rapid aircoupled impact-echo scanning technique to locate shallow delaminations in concrete.
