A new type of lignosulfonate based superplasticizer for self-compacting concrete
It is well known that the superplasticizer plays an important role in the production of selfcompacting concrete (SCC). For such case, the admixture is normally a polycarboxylate based polymer. However, as is reported from this study, a lignosulfonate based polymer can be applied as well for the SCC. This paper reports the effect of three different types of lignosulfonates on the rheological behavior of fresh concrete. These lignosulfonates are sodium based and are designated here as low molecular weight (LMW), high molecular weight (HMW) and very high molecular weight (VHMW). The last type is a new experimental brand. In addition, the effect of a naphthalene-based superplasticizer (SNF) is reported for comparison. The same concrete mixture proportion is used for all batches, only the type of admixture differs. The concrete was not designed to be a self-compacting as such, but rather to be a high strength vibrated concrete (28 days cube compressive strength about 65 MPa and w/c=0.4). However, with the use of the VHMW lignosulfonate, a SCC resulted that signifies its large potential for such type of concrete.
