Carbonation-induced corrosion in Urban concrete structures
The effect of carbonation induced corrosion, on concrete buildings, located in urban environments, was investigated. For the tests, four campuses (FE, PR, FIQ, and FI) were chosen in Mexico City, all with more than 20 year old buildings. Several factors, including type of deterioration, age, and orientation, were considered. In campus FE, visual inspection showed concrete cracks and spalls in external and internal beams in Building C, and the same type of damage in internal beams in Building D. In campus PR, visual inspection showed concrete cracks and spalls in columns and concrete ceilings in Building D, Building E represented only a few cracks, and Building G showed no damage, so it was used as a control. In Campus FIQ, visual inspection showed concrete cracks and spalls in external beams in Building A. In Campus FI, spalling damage was observed in Building C, and in a thin concrete element from Building M.
