Nondestructive investigation of full-scale barge impacts on bridge piers
The use of UPV tomography of structural members which have sustained damage imparted by impact loading has proven to be a viable method for integrity assessment. The direct collision between the barge and the impact-block produced more damage in terms of resultant wave velocity decrease (time-of-flight increase) when compared with Pier 1, which did not sustain direct contact with the barge. This phenomenon is due to the energy dissipation that was absorbed by the impact block itself in conjunction with a different loading condition experienced by the pier. The use of UPV tomography detected damage within the structure which was not detectable visually. Since the application of NDT is becoming more common for the inspection of structures, it is crucial for inspectors to consider that despite the ability to acquire data like never before, the use of NDT alone should not be used to form conclusions about the structural condition assessment. It is imperative to incorporate the expertise of a structural engineer when making decisions about the integrity of a structure.
