Comparison of high-resolution 3D imaging radar survey with material testing data in an overall structural integrity assessment of a concrete ringwall
A high-resolution 3D GPR survey using 900- and 1500-MHz antennas and material testing were conducted on a large concrete structure slated for renovations. The GPR survey imaged representative portions of the 23.47-m diameter ringwall; coring and Schmidt Hammer testing were performed in support of and in addition to the GPR data collection. The main objectives of the survey were to assess the concrete integrity and reinforcement pattern of the upper (newer) and lower (older) ringwall sections. Concrete integrity was determined from the presence and extent of deterioration in the form of air- or water-filled cavities and advanced rebar oxidation. Results of the core and Schmidt Hammer tests were used to constrain and support GPR interpretations in all the surveyed areas. Time-slice views of the 3D composite models were provided to the client in video format to illustrate the survey results. Results from the high-resolution GPR survey and the materials testing were integrated to fully assess the condition of the structure. A subjective classification scheme established a semi-quantitative basis for ranking the surveyed areas in terms of the relative amount of concrete defects present in each area. The investigation indicated that the high-resolution GPR data correlated well with the material testing results; however, in some circumstances, GPR anomalies suggested higher levels of defects than were actually found. This study demonstrates that material testing remains an integral part of high-resolution 3D GPR surveys.
