Effect of cement composition on corrosion behaviour of galvanised tubes
In order to understand the phenomenon of corrosion of galvanised tubes for plumbing applications, a study has been undertaken in the laboratory by treating five sets of galvanised tubes in varying cement compositions prepared synthetically for a period of over 45 days. It is evident, based on the experimental findings, that clinker phases of cement play a very important role in deciding the selectivity of galvanised tubes in plumbing applications. It can be concluded that the galvanised tubes will perform better from the point of view of corrosion resistance if the clinker chemistry and mineralogical phases are controlled so as to get 25 % C3S (alite), about 50 % C2S (belite), about 5 % C3A (tri calcium aluminate) and about 20 - 25 % C4AF (tetra calcium aluminium ferrite) + C3A.
