Laser system measurements on the FHWA curved girder bridge
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Nondestructive Evaluation Center laser system has been used for a number of years to measure full-sized curved girder bridge girders under testing at the FHWA Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC). This laser instrument can precisely measure the global movements of large structural objects and can measure very small deformation in these structural objects. This instrument has unique capabilities to make very high-resolution measurements on very large structural specimens. Measurements made during parts of testing were used to capture the out-of-plane distortions of the entire web of a girder under various loading configurations. An example of some measurements made during erection of these curved girder bridges is also presented. This paper discusses gives some examples of how the FHWA laser system can be used for large-scale structural testing and shows what type of data is collected.
