A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
In 1999, a research project was undertaken by the research group on NDT and instrumentation (Universite de Sherbrooke) in collaboration with the ministry of transportation of Quebec. The objective of this project was to define how the GPR technology can be better exploited by bridge engineers. Up to now, the half-cell potential (HCP) and GPR techniques were conducted on thirty concrete bridge decks. The result indicates a correlation between the GRP data and the HCP data. The detail of this finding is discussed in this paper and its practical value and limitation will be demonstrated using case studies. In the light of the results presented in this paper, it appears possible to characterise the corrosion activity in reinforced concrete bridge decks by means of the electromagnetic waves attenuation in the concrete.
