Automated NDE of post-tensioned concrete bridges using radar, ultrasonic echo and impact-echo
Investigations at post-tensioned concrete bridges carried out with radar, impact-echo and ultrasonic echo have shown that test problems such as localisation of metallic tendon ducts and reinforcement bars as well as determination of the grouting condition in tendon ducts can be more reliably solved by taking data in two dimensional, rather dense grids (mesh width between 2 cm and 5 cm). Therefore scanning systems have been developed at BAM, which allow automated measurements with the mentioned echo test methods. In this way measurement areas up to 4 m x 10 m have been investigated at several post-tensioned concrete bridges. Special data processing methods such as 3D-reconstruction and fusion of data sets are used for a more detailed interpretation of the results. So, images of the perpendicularly arranged bars of reinforcement layers could be generated very well from fused and 3Dreconstructed radar data sets. Tendon ducts were located up to a measurement depth of approximately 55 cm.
