Evaluating distributed damage in concrete using nonlinear ultrasound
Evaluating distributed damage in concrete using conventional nondestructive testing methods is difficult due to the methods poor sensitivity to this type of deterioration. However, nonlinear ultrasonic methods have been shown to be extraordinarily sensitive to distributed damage. The sensitivity of the method for detecting distributed damage in its early stages of development is high and increases as damage progresses. The second and third harmonic ratios have been found to be extraordinarily sensitive to compression induced damage in concrete. Increasing input power levels result in increased sensitivity to damage. At the higher input power levels the damage associated with service load stresses is also clearly indicated.
