Roller compacted concrete pavement evaluated by ultrasound measurements
There have been several applications of Roller compacted concrete (RCC) in pavements over the past years. Ports; parking, storage, and staging areas; municipal streets; and intersections are some of the applications that have been constructed with RCC. RCC has comparable strength to plain concrete but permits a higher speed of placement, resulting on cost savings. This work presents a study to monitor the development of RCC properties with time with ultrasound waves. RCC mixtures were prepared with a cement consumption of 80, 120, and 160 kg/m3. Compressive strength and flexural strength were evaluated for each mixture at 3, 7, 28 and 90 days. At the same ages, ultrasound measurements were performed to assess the development between ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) over time, as well as the relationship between UPV and the mechanical properties for each mixture. In order to replicate possible field applications, ultrasound waves were also applied through the indirect transmission mode over the concrete surface.
