Combined NMR relaxometry and cryoporometry to study the hydration of cement
Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) the hydration kinetics of cement was studied. NMR has the advance over other techniques that it can non-destructively probe the pore-structure by relaxometry. Hence the pore size distribution can be measured during hydration. In order to verify the relaxometry results these were compared by cryoporometry measurements. Where NMR relaxometry uses the random motion of the molecules, cryoporometry uses the melting point depression of the confined liquid in the pores. However both methods probe the surface-tovolume ratio. An NMR set-up has been built to simultaneously perform relaxometry and cryoporometry. First the cement sample was allowed to hydrate for 72 hours during which the relaxation was measured. Thereafter the sample was cooled down to -40 deg C and cryoporometry was performed on the same sample.
