Challenges in construction of Stonecutters Bridge and progress update
With a main span of 1,018 m Stonecutters Bridge is at the forefront of present technology for cable stayed bridges. In constructing the bridge the contractor is facing many tough challenges which require innovative but practical solutions. The purpose of this paper is to outline the approaches adopted by the contractor and to give an update on progress of the project. Foundations (piling works, pile cap construction), construction of back span piers and back span decks, tower construction, steelwork fabrication, stay cable manufacture and installation and erection of the steel deck are described.
