Im Beitrag wird der Status der Kohlenindustrie in den USA erörtert. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf der Sicherheit, der Produktivität, dem Markt sowie einigen neuen Entwicklungen im Kohlebergbau, die zu einer Verbesserung der Trendentwicklung in Bezug auf Sicherheit und Produktivität beigetragen haben. Obwohl es auch andere bedeutsame Entwicklungen in der Kohlenaufbereitung, Kohlenbehandlung und den Transport gegeben hat, sind diese Themen nicht Gegenstand der Betrachtungen. Abschließend werden noch einige neue Herausforderungen bezüglich Umwelt, Untertagebergbau (Strebbau, Room-and-Pillar Mining), Übertagebergbau, Endböschungsbergbau sowie Methanausgasung erörtert, die sich für die Kohleindustrie der USA in den kommenden Jahren ergeben.
The scope of this paper is to discuss the state of the coal industry of the USA. The focus will be on safety, productivity, the market and some of the recent significant advancements in coal mining which have contributed to the improving trends in safety and productivity. Although there have been significant developments in coal benefication, coal handling and transportation, those topics are outside the scope of this paper. In conclusion some of the challenges for the coal industry in the USA for the coming years will be discussed briefly.
