Corrosion behavior of aeronautic alloys in fire fighting retardants
The aim of this paper is to evaluate the corrosion behaviour of aluminium and steel alloys in contact with long term fire retardants (Fire Trol 931 and Fire Foam 103). These products, dropped from air-tankers, are used to prevent the forest against fire. Some electrochemical measurements in direct and alternate current are carried out to compensate the lack of corrosion knowledge. In these solutions the corrosion rate of aluminium is low, whereas steel shows a moderate corrosion rate. Complementary results about morphology are obtained with microscopy before and after corrosion tests. Structure and composition of the blue layers, deposited on the electrode surface after the corrosion tests, are also analysed. Prussian blue is highlighted by several methods. This layer reduces the corrosion rate on both aluminium alloys and steel.
