This report gives the trends of powertrain components: The mechanical load increases. Reduction of engine emissions (EU4 Peak firing pressure of estimated 190 bar is required, EU 5 Peak firing pressure of estimated 210 bar is required). The trends are increasing motor power, reduction of fuel consumption, lightweight construction and compact motor design. The maximal cylinder pressures demands different engine block materials (Mg- oder Al-alloy or flake graphite cast iron or compacted graphite cast iron). The use of compacted graphite cast iron for cylinder blocks was 1999 BMW and Audi, 2000 DAF, 2003 Ford and Audi and 2004 Mercedes-Benz. Compacted graphite cast iron has a high demand upon machining process. The tool life for milling, drilling, rough boring and fine boring is lower than that for flake graphite cast iron. In the report are given a benchmark for deep hole drilling in CGI, the parameters of machining with ceramic tools and a evaluation of the stock honing process for honing of CGI cylinder blocks.
