Development of fire rated ceramifiable cable insulation
In this work the authors examined the ceramic strength, some polymer properties as well as the high temperature electrical resistance of a ceramifiable polymer system used as cable insulation. The experimental data for the polymer properties and ceramic strength was collected using a range of standard laboratory techniques. A method consisting of an in house experimental rig and a high temperature furnace was used to determine the electrical resistance of the formed ceramic. Using a statistical experimental design, and subsequent ANOVA analyses the authors were able to articulate some of the relationships between the various pre-ceramic components and the desired properties and hence optimize the component quantities. The authors also found that although it was possible to determine the resistivity of individual samples, and delineate the differences, there was some doubt as to the accuracy of the measurements. This is work in progress.
