A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
As flame retardant standards become more stringent, dealing with smoke propagation issues has become a 'hot button' for many applications. For flexible PVC, several approaches are possible including substituting all or a partial amount of the plasticizer package with an alkyl diphenyl phosphate or by the careful selection of additives or, a combination of both. Vinyl formulations looking at various flame retardant plasticizer alternatives will be investigated and measured for smoke development. Phosphate ester plasticizers are an excellent means to offer flame retardancy to a number of thermoplastic composites, especially vinyl compounds. Although other flame retardant systems may offer more in terms of flame resistance, sometimes regulations/specifications require other high performance properties that may not be within the range of these products. Where low smoke propagation and flexibility are required, phosphate esters, especially alkyl diphenyl phosphates may be the best choice. This is especially true for products used as building materials Premium levels of flame retardancy and low smoke generation are required to pass difficult test protocols (UL910, NFPA 723, etc.). These products can offer better cost performance value than other systems because they can be formulated to provide exceptional flame retardancy and also positively influence plasticizing properties to reach low temperature flexibility values.
