Sustainable flame retardants - beyond fire safety, RoHS, and WEEE compliance
The job of selecting the right flame retardant for today's electrical and electronic applications goes beyond regulatory, cost, and performance criteria. Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important additional criteria. This paper will examine the implications of all of these selection criteria for electronic enclosure applications via specific examples such as the draft International Electro Technical Commission (IEC) standard requiring protection against the risk of external ignition of consumer and IT electronics, the EU Restriction on the Use of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive, the EU Waste Electrical and Electronics (WEEE) Directive, environmental and performance benefits of flame retardants for styrenic applications, and Albemarle's implementation of a novel product stewardship program.
