As ultra-modern super stadiums emerge, architectural fabrics accommodate changing times
NFL's Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals recently unveiled spectacularly spacious retractable roof stadiums (Reliant Stadium in Houston and University of Phoenix Stadium) covered with Teflon-coated tensioned-membrane fabrics. In both cases, the roofs are adorned with Sheerfill II architectural membrane, provided by Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics Corporation. The fabric panels are mounted on a retractable frame roof that can be opened or closed depending on the weather. Houston's Reliant Stadium, which opened in 2002, covers 1.9 million square feet. According to stadium management, the retractable roof takes 10 minutes to open and close. A main highlight of the stadium is its translucency, enhanced by a patented Ultalux material, also from Saint-Gobain, that is integrated into the architectural fabric. Ultralux transmits up to 25 percent of the lightfalling on it.
