New molybdate smoke suppressant for PVC
PVC is an flame retardant polymer and often used in applications requiring low flame spread. For some applications, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has established rigorous smoke standards. So communication cable must pass NFPA 262 (Steiner Tunnel Test). PVC manufacturers are looking for new technology to increase the efficiency of smoke suppression additives. Inorganic molybdates is suited for smoke suppression based on their inherent capability of promoting char formation. The effectiveness of smoke suppression is strongly influenced by the particle size and surface area of the molybdate additive. Here a new high surface area molybdate smoke suppressant is described. The new smoke suppressant technology is shown to be more effective at lower use levels than conventional molybdate chemistry. Improved performance is demonstrated by cone calorimeter and smoke chamber tests. These molybdate based additives function in the condensed phase. Test results are displayed.
