Characteristics of metakaolin blended cement pastes
The formation of free lime (CH) during the hydration of Ordinary Portland cement (OPC), decreases the durability of cement structures and therefore the pozzolanic properties of metakaolin (Mkn) allow to avoid this drawback. So, the reaction kinetics of MKn in the OPC/MKn blended cement pastes were investigated. The consumption of the free CH was evaluated by the IR and DTA techniques. The results showed that the water of consistency as well as setting time increase gradually with the addition of Mkn at the expense of the OPC. The combined water content increases with the substitution of the OPC by MKn up to 15 mass-% and then decreases, whilst the free CH content decreases sharply. Also, the bulk density increases slightly, while the apparent porosity decreases. The compressive strength increases sharply up to 28 days, and slightly onward due to the pozzolanic reaction effect. The IR and DTA analyses proved that the intensity of the CH peaks of the OPC increases up to 28 days, while those of the OPC/Mkn blended cement pastes decrease with curing time and Mkn content. The SEM micrographs indicated that the hydration products of the OPC/ Mkn cement pastes are the same as those of the neat OPC pastes but with different ratios and morphologies.
