Sisal fibre geotextiles for soil strengthening
The stability of an embankment built on saturated soft soil should improve with time as pore pressures in the foundation soil dissipate and the shear strength increases. Hence, in such a situation it should be possible to employ basal reinforcement which loses strength progressively with time, provided it is in a quantifiable and predictable manner, as is the case with Vegetable Fibre Geotextiles. A parametric study has been undertaken of the rotational stability of a 3 m high basally-reinforced, embankment built on soft clay to quantify the variation of required reinforcement tensile strength with time for a specified global Factor of Safety. It is shown that tensile materials manufactured using Sisal fibres are able to provide time vs. strength profiles which would satisfy the reinforcement strength requirements obtained from the parametric study.
