Report on the ageing behaviour of elastomeric building sealants exposed to dynamic natural and artificial weathering after 10 years exposition
This paper provides an overview of a comprehensive ten-years research project into the effects of dynamic natural and artificial weathering on tensile/adhesion joints. The main aim of the project is to develop an improved test methodology for assessing the long-term performance of elastomeric building sealants to different climatic and service conditions. A major focus of the project is the investigation of effects of cyclic joint movement on sealed test joints when carried out simultaneously with or separately from periods of artificial and natural weathering. To this end, standard ISO 8339 test specimens with concrete supports are being exposed with and without simultaneous or separate movement to various ageing regimes. The main intention of the paper is to convey the overall objectives and background of the study and to provide information on the weathering and cyclic movement regimes employed. The paper also provides the results that have been obtained after ten years natural weathering in Leipzig.
