Jackets wrap bridge piles with cathodic protection
The Bridge Tunnel Commission has planned to use CP jackets at the selected bridge-tunnel piles, to overcome the steel corrosion problems arising due to chlorides break down and alleviate the cracking and spalling of the concrete piles. The CP jacket system installed on 215 of the structures piles utilizes galvanic CP to mitigate corrosion of the piles reinforcing steel and creates a barrier against chlorides, moisture, and oxygen. The crews from Percon Construction Co. is performing repairs and installing the CP jackets using a jack-up barge underneath the bridge deck by connecting every piece of steel in the concrete sections to the piles CP system. The CP jackets are designed to withstand the high waves and swells resulting from the harsh Atlantic Ocean weather and maritime activities in the nearby shipping lanes.
