Sulfur polymer cement, sulfur concrete - new materials on the bases of hazardous industrial wastes
Great amount of the elementary sulfur, as a by-product, is produced in oil refinery during the technological processing of the crude oil. The sulfur must be stored into the particularly equipped space. Quantity of sulfur depends of the origin of crude oil. According to the experts estimate, about 60.000 tones of elementary sulfur is produced annually during the process of 4.5 million tones of crude oil in NIS. Based on former experience, disposal of the sulfur makes great financial and ecological problems. In accordance with world experience, it is possible to valorize above quantity of sulfur through the products used in constructions: sulfur concrete, asphalt and synthetic gypsum. Sulfur concrete is thermoplastic material obtained during the mixing of modified melted sulfur with mineral aggregates. Sulfur completely replaces Portland cement in composite construction materials such is concrete. On the bases of the investigation, sulfur concrete could be used in new constructions as well as in reconstruction, particularly in cases where good resistance on corrosion and on aggressive effects of surrounding environment is necessary.
