Masonry constructions: Mechanical models and numerical applications. Masonry arches, vaults and domes (Chap. 5)
The numerical method proposed in this chapter allows for analyzing any kind of vault (masonry spire, fan vault, incomplete domes, etc.), subjected to any type of static load, problems which can be difficult to solve using classical methods [Heyman J., Equilibrium of shell structures, Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1977]. In addition, it is possible to determine the collapse multiplier for different types of loads. It is pointed out that collapse of a masonry vault is due to the formation of hinges on its extrados and intrados. However, other collapse mechanisms can be considered, for example by removing the 'non-sliding' assumption or assuming a bounded compressive strength for the masonry.
