Haptic feedback for mobile machines
The design of human-machine interfaces will play a decisive role in future developments of mobile machines because this leads to an increase of efficiency, safety and comfort. Intuitive operational concepts reduce the time required to train new operators. The rising number of publications and patents during the last years indicates the increased significance of this issue. Implementing haptic feedback can make the operation of mobile machines more intuitive and comfortable. Particularly with regard to coordinated control, haptic feedback is necessary to report the dynamics of the tool in the workspace back to the operator. The challenges while developing hydraulic systems with haptic feedback are the design of the human-machine interface (good handling feel, ergonomics, controller design for haptic feedback) and the adaptation to the specific requirements of mobile applications (construction of robust haptic operation devices, appropriate valves and sensors). The paper describes the state of the art of haptic operational concepts for mobile machines, focusing on excavators. Possible fields of application are presented. The design of humanmachine interfaces will play a decisive role in future developments for mobile machines because this leads to an increase of efficiency, safety and comfort.
