Metabolic demands of simulated firefighting tasks
Firefighting is a physiologically challenging profession. Stress and overexertion are high among firefighters. Firefighters having higher cardiovascular fitness completed a series of simulated firefighting tasks more quickly than those having lower fitness. These results support the need of a high level of cardiovascular fitness for firefighters to ensure not only their safety, but that of fellow firefighters and rescue victims. In summary, the present study measured directly the energy requirements of firefighters performing a continuous series of simulated firefighting tasks at a self-selected pace representative of an actual fire scene. Firefighting activities can be physically demanding; firefighters in the present study averaged 8.3 METS, which was 62 % of their VO2max for over 8.5 min. Additionally, firefighter performance is strongly associated with a firefighter's VO2max.
