Sustainability dominates debates over the current and future quality of our built environment. The eco-towns concept has been adopted globally and tailored to fit separate demands and contexts in different fashions, although under single eco-town banner. Eco-town developments are claimed at various locations in China despite very different social, economic and environmental pressures. Eco-towns seek to meet environmental aims through the creation of new settlements. They embody what current planning policy hopes to deliver in both existing and future development. The English proposal specifically target three key areas: climate change, housing supply and sustainability improvements. It is not only location and urban design that will define eco-towns, but density. To make the most of efficiency gains and reduce urban sprawl, increases densities will be required.
