Processing technique to impregnate glass fibre mats for textile reinforced cementitious composite
This research will study the quality of an innovative manufacturing process designed for the mechanical impregnation of Chopped Strand Mats by comparing laminates manufactured in such a way to laminates impregnated by Hand Lay Up means. The basic principles of this mechanical impregnator as well as the manufacturing of the cement based laminates will be explained. For comparison, uniaxial and bi-axial tensile tests and three-point bending tests are performed on specimens produced by both production techniques. All tests are monitored with extensometer, LVDT or Digital Image Correlation measuring techniques. As it is observed in a limited amount of tests it can be said that the quality reaches on many fields the quality obtained by hand lay-up. Maximum stress in both Processing Technique to Impregnate Glass Fibre Mats composite and fibre and pre- and post-cracking stiffness are comparable Without any after treatment like compression moulding or pultrusion, it must be said that the bounding achieved by this prototype is less than the one obtained using hand lay-up. Nevertheless, as a first step in a production process it delivers satisfactory results, in an industrial attractive way a clean and well balanced impregnation of the fibres has been achieved.
