New sensors for rebar corrosion monitoring
A prerequisite of durability and functional capability of both reinforced and prestressed concrete structures is the corrosion protection of the reinforcing steel elements. Therefore corrosion monitoring is an important component of life cycle management of many structures, exposed to atmospheric conditions or to a harmful environment. But neither for reinforcing steel nor for grouted interior or for ungrouted exterior tendons reliable non-destructive methods are available today to assess the corrosion situation or to locate tendon fractures. This contribution deals with the assessment of corrosion in concrete structures, containing reinforcing or prestressing steel elements. A focus is directed on the development, testing and application of novel calibration-free mini-sensors for the evaluation of rebar corrosion initiation in concrete members, consisting of several parallel arranged, 0.065 to 0.5 mm thin iron filaments. Main advantages of the filament-sensors are the simple design and measuring principle. Also a subsequent sensor installation into boreholes with a filling grout is viable too.
