Cement-based stabilisation/solidification of electric arc furnace dust
Electric arc furnace dust is a hazardous waste that must be treated prior to its landfill disposal in order to reduce the leachability of contaminants to acceptable levels. Cementbased Stabilisation/Solidification was evaluated as an option for the treatment of this waste material. Grout samples with waste loads in the range of 40 % to 90 % of dry mass and water-to-solids ratio of 0.35 - 0.40 were produced and tested. Consistence, setting time, compressive strength, microstructural and leaching properties were assessed. The high concentration of zinc in the waste caused an initial delay of cement hydration, although this effect was generally overcome at later ages. The leaching of the cement-based waste forms was assessed according to the UK hazardous waste landfill acceptance criteria for both granular waste and monolithic materials.
