Solidification/stabilization of chemical sludge generated from textile wastewater treatment plants using ordinary portland cement (OPC)
The chemical sludge from textile common effluent treatment plants is considered as hazardous waste as per Indian Hazardous Waste (management and handling) amendment rules 2003. It is generated in voluminous amount and its safe disposal is a major issue. In this study, the reuse of chemical sludge was explored using solidification/stabilization with Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). Sludge was used as a partial replacement of cement, by mixing 30 % to 70 % of sludge in cement. After the experimental curing, the blocks were evaluated for physical engineering properties and chemical properties. The physical engineering data indicates that sludge has a potential to be used for reused as construction materials. The heavy metals data in the leachate also reveals that there is a negligible leaching of heavy metals in the TCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure) leachate. Therefore the chemical sludge from textile wastewater treatment plants has a potential to be reused as construction materials in different applications.
