Lessons learned from scrap-metal fires and accidents during transportation
Recently scrap metal fires and explosions occurred often during the transportation in and around Japan. Mostly they occurred during transportation by ships, and it is very difficult to extinguish it. Some fires and explosions were investigated, and it was found causes of the fires using the TG-DTA, Super CRC and fall hammer test. Proper extinguisher to develop against such fires is neded. The following items have high possibilities as causes of fires to start initial faint heat generation: (1) Short circuit, tracking of automobile batteries through scraps metal, water, or other materials (2) Dilute sulfuric acid, H2SO4 of automobile battery contacts with scrap metal or combustible material to produce heat and combustible gas. Other high possibilities of cause of fires are: (1) Lithium coin battery. In waste treat facilities, we sometimes found lithium coin batteries around the origin of fires, and we know it is so dangerous that makes explosion. They sneak into scrap metal easily. Other batteries, such as alkaline battery, silver oxide battery has less explosive properties, but they also have some possibilities because of high energy. (2) Metal reacts with water, and makes heat and gas generation. Friction, or fall impact during loading or transportation may make ignition. If there exists combustible material, such as paper, gasoline which might get ignition with heat of friction or impact.
