Properties of cement and mortar containing natural pozzolan and zeolite
The present study examines the effect of natural pozzolan (NP) and zeolite (Z) on the properties of cement and mortar, the parameters studied included compressive strength, bending strength, volume expansion, grinding time, and setting time. The hydration products were identified by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and their microstructure by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Thermal decomposition of hydrated samples cured up to 28 days was also studied with the thermoanalytical methods (TG/DTA). The results show that the presence of NP and Z in cement prolongs the setting time of the cement. The inclusion of Z and NP in the matrix resulted in a loss in early strength of the mortar. However, the loss in the early strength can be compensated by finer grinding. The incorporation of Z and NP in cement contributes to the consumption of calcium hydroxide formed during the cement hydration and the formation of cement like hydrated products.
