Modelling acid attack on concrete structural components
A numerical model is presented for the prediction of concrete corrosion due to acid attack where the degree of degradation is characterised by the depth of a porous, corroded surface layer of reduced mechanical strength. The corrosion progress can be simulated for a given concrete composition and attack by organic or mineral acids under static or flowing conditions. The concrete may contain dissolvable or acid resistant aggregate of specifiable grading. The model simulates the kinetics of the dissolution reaction of the acid with the binder paste matrix and aggregate and the resulting increase in porosity. The diffusion of species in the pore solution is calculated with the Nernst-Planck equation. Effects of precipitation and dissolution on diffusion are included. It is possible to simulate the effect of abrasion of corroded surface concrete and loss of surface aggregate particles.
