Evaluation of durability and cracking tendency of Ultra High Performance Concrete
Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) is a new type of cementitious material which offers a variety of new possibilities for the building sector. An essential basis for the practical application of UHPC is the knowledge of its long term behaviour. In this paper, the resistance of UHPC against the penetration of various aggressive agents was investigated and compared to that observed for ordinary concrete and high performance concrete. This was done by means of accelerated durability tests that included measurements of carbonation depth and chloride profile after exposure to a salt solution. The influence of the curing conditions was also investigated. In addition, shrinkage measurements and ring tests were performed for the evaluation of the cracking tendency of UHPC under restrained conditions. The experimental results show that UHPC exhibits considerable improvement in durability due to its lower porosity. On the other hand, the higher autogenous shrinkage of UHPC seems to increase its cracking potential.
