Fracture characteristics of fibrous concrete composites
Fracture toughness in recent years is recognized and accepted to be one of the most important material properties. There are several efforts that explain the fracture characteristics of metals reasonably well by taking into account the characteristics at the microscopic levels as well as to accommodate the different geometries. While these have been successful to an acceptable degree in metals, the scenario in composites like concrete has not reached the same degree of success. The primary difficulty is in understanding and accommodating the macro conglomerate characteristics of these materials. The different sizes of aggregates and the corresponding effects of intrusions and defect locations can not be defined clearly. While the complex aggregate distribution in concrete composites is difficult to represent mathematically, the problem is complicated further through the introduction of fibers in the system. This paper brings to fore some of these aspects and suggests a broad outline to address the same.
