Reaction products between magnesia spinel or magnesia zirconia refractories and hot kiln meal or Portland clinker
The corrosion resistance to Portland clinker and a hot kiln meal of different magnesia-spinel (MSp) and magnesia-zirconia (MZ) refractory bricks were tested in the typical temperature range of the material in the transition zone and the sintering zone of 1200 deg C to 1450 deg C. The industry cement materials are rich of sulphur and chlorine. Investigations were carried out with powder tests and coating tests. The microstructures of the as-delivered and tested samples were researched by X-ray and SEM-EDS techniques. The new phases formation in the samples with MSp (free and with ZrO2) bricks are binary phases (C12A7 tmp - 1392 deg C, CaZrO3: tmp - 2345 deg C)1: and ternary phases (C2AS: tmp - 1593 deg C or C3MS2: tdp - 1573 deg C) after tests at the temperature of 1200 deg C, ternary phases of C7A3Z (tmp - 1550 deg C) and CaZrO3 and quaternary phases Q-C20A13M3S3 or C6A4(M,f)S (tdp - 1380 deg C) after tests at the temperature of 1300 deg C and higher. The C3A3xCaSO4 phase is formed in the sample of the corrosion tests up to the temperature of 1300 deg C. The new phases formation in the sample with the MZ bricks are clinker phases (beta-C2S, C3A and C2(A,F)/C4AF) and the C7A3Z phase.
