Technologies for smart windows
The Electrochromic (EC) glass that uses electrical energy to transition between clear and darkened states are used for smart window technology and has significant implications for the future design and outfitting of commercial and residential buildings. Smart windows generally include liquid crystal systems that change from clear to translucent and photochromic glass that darkens in sunlight with a focus on energy savings and advanced functionality. The use of metal-oxide product and suspended particle device (SPD) technology facilitates the efficiency of the glass and consist of five-layer coatings sandwiched between two sheets of glass. The SPD glass consist of two panes with conductive coatings on the inside surfaces and make windows totally opaque. The ultimate determining factor in capturing market share can bring the prices down as commercialization grows with varied number of opportunities for technology.
