History, performance, and design of geotextiles in levees: A report from New Orleans. Part 1
After the Hurricane Katrina, most engineers focused on the failed levees, the causes of failure and measures that should prevent similar calamities in the future. Little attention from technical investigators and the public has been given to the fact that geotextiles reinforced levees withstood the storm surges and performed exceptionally. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has been among the first users of high-strength geotextiles to improve the stability of levees. As the USACE works to update the New Orleans levee system, it will continue using design methodologies that include geotextiles. This article focuses on the history, performance, and future use of geotextiles in levees. It examines the reasons why geotextile-reinforced levees survived Hurricane Katrina, describes USACE design improvements, and includes a review of literature and design methods.
