Structural health monitoring of bridge cables
Bridges are critical components of the civil infrastructure and are normally designed for a long lifespan. The lifespan of suspension bridges depends on the health of their cables, which, in turn, is a function of many factors. Therefore, continuous structural health monitoring (SHM) and regular condition assessment of cables is highly desirable. In this article, some SHM procedures based on direct testing, indirect nondestructive testing and vibration theory are presented. The potential of SHM techniques based on direct and indirect sensing techniques, and nonlinear dynamics theory, for application in continuous health monitoring of bridge cables is found to be considerable. Innovations in terms of functional materials such as nanosensors, can critically enhance overall bridge technology. New functional or structural materials should bring significant advances that can be strategically challenging. The total life-cost, rather than the up-front cost, is the target of bridge owners.
